This is a small community group consisting of 36 motivated men and women, young and old. They are based in Kultali Island on the eastern side of Sundarbans. They have facilitated the formation of over 130 Self-Help-Groups involving 1500 women up to April 2005. They also have several other projects running including a hospital project (funded by the Irish Embassy, New Delhi).

This group has built a hospital in the remote Satjelia Island in the eastern part of Sundarbans with funding from the Irish Embassy. ICNL is associated with Project Tiger and many international conservation groups dedicated to the protection of the Royal Bengal Tiger and the habitat of the Sundarbans. It was this group that introduced me to the widows of Sundarbans in 2001.
Tiger Widows Organisation have provided some funds for the refurbishment of a boat that can be used for local medical emergencies and transport needs for ICNL and Tiger Widows Organisation. Travelling by boat around the Sundarban Islands is the only effective means of transportation.
Families in Sundarbans who participate do not have to risk their lives by going into the forest. This is how we are...
